You’re considering office work, as you feel this would be the right fit for you. You’re not sure, however, which position is the right one for you.

What are the positions in an office?

It depends somewhat on the office, but there are a number of different positions in most workplaces. A common role is receptionist or administrative assistant. There are usually positions in the accounting department, and you’ll usually find data entry clerks, IT personnel, and marketing and sales professionals.

Which job is right for you? Consider the following types of office positions to find out what your ideal next role could look like.

1. Receptionists and Administrative Assistants

Receptionist is a great position to consider if you’re a people person. These employees are usually found answering phones and receiving visitors to the office. They may accept deliveries and schedule shipments, and they may schedule appointments and meetings.

Administrative assistants tend to have more responsibilities. They may write emails and memos, or act as personal secretaries for a team of executives or managers. They handle some of the same tasks receptionists do, such as accepting mail and scheduling appointments, but usually for one or two people, not the entire office.

Administrative assistants may also help with other tasks, such as data entry, report preparation, and travel arrangements.

2. Accounting Positions

Almost every office will have an accounting department of some kind. In small businesses, it may be one or two people, while larger businesses will employ a wider range of accounting professionals. You may be able to take on a position in this department, particularly if you have the right training.

If you’re still in school and want to get some practical experience, taking on a role in an accounting department could be a great way to gain valuable experience. You may start in a position such as file clerk, billing clerk, or accounts payable clerk.

3. Customer Service Representatives and Account Managers

Many offices have a customer service department, which employs people who provide assistance to customers. Account managers often have a similar function, but they usually work with business-to-business clients and look after accounts, rather than individual customers.

Nonetheless, the two functions are similar. In both cases, these positions deliver service to the client or customer. The account manager looks after the account, ensuring bills are issued and paid on time. They may also discuss new products or services with the client, and they’ll help clients solve problems.

Customer service representatives also assist customers with issues they’re encountering. They may also contact customers about new products or services the customer may be interested in.

4. IT Personnel

One type of office position that’s increasingly common is the IT professional. Whether it’s a data entry clerk, a help desk technician, or another position, more offices are adding IT staff to their ranks as they become more reliant on technology. As computer technology has become more integrated into everyday business operations, IT staff is needed to keep information technology at the office running smoothly.

There are many other common positions in offices, including human resources professionals and marketing staff. The specific positions in any office will depend on the business’s needs. For example, a doctor’s office will need different staff than a business focused on delivering a product to clients.
