Summer employment has come to an end, and fall has arrived. It’s the busiest season for employers and hiring managers, as the fall usually sets off a rush of hiring. You may be ramping up production for the busy holiday season, or you may have a huge push to meet fourth-quarter sales targets.
You might also be dealing with the prospect of many of your temporary summer employees leaving your company to pursue other opportunities. If possible, you want to try to keep as many of them on board as possible. Here’s why you should aim to keep your temporary summer workers well into the fall.
It Means Making Fewer Hires
As established, fall is a busy season for hiring in Canada. In fact, most people would call it peak hiring season. Employers and hiring managers often find themselves rushing to fill multiple positions.
This can occur for a number of reasons. One reason is that production may pick up in the fall. You may have a push to meet sales quotas, or you might need to fill large orders for the holiday season. Retail often sees an uptick in the fall, as do other industries.
The result is that many industries end up hiring during this season. The other factor is students and others leaving summer employment. If you already need to fill a few positions, then a mass exodus of students heading back to school can leave you with more open positions than you’d like.
Keeping some of your summer employees around into the fall minimizes the number of hires you’ll need to make. That, in turn, can make the busy fall season a little less stressful for you.
They’re Already Trained
When you need to make new hires, your productivity may dip. This is most noticeable in the fall, when you may need to hire for several positions. If many people have left summer employment and you need to also fill a couple of full time positions, you could find yourself running at half speed during the busiest time of year.
Even when you do fill some or all of these positions, you then have to train the new employees. This can mean your productivity stays lower for a few weeks longer.
Your summer employees are already trained and ready to meet productivity expectations. They can also help you train new hires you need to bring on during the fall. Keeping at least a few of your summer workers in the fall can help you push productivity higher when you need it most.
Essentially, you’ll experience less downtime if you can extend contracts for some of your summer employees.
Some Temporary Workers Want to Stay On
Another very good reason to keep some of your summer employees on the roster into the fall is that some of them will want to stay on with you. Whether they think it’s great experience, they want to continue building a career with you, or they want to maintain employment during school, many of your temporary workers would prefer to have a job during the fall.
Most of the temporary employees you retain will be reliable workers who are already trained. You’ve already worked with them over the summer months, so you know their work ethic and their talents. Work with them to accommodate their school schedules, and you and the employees will find a great solution for everyone.
