1. Start Early to Stay Organized

Adopt a proactive mindset and get all your application materials and networking in order. Remember there’s going to be quite a wave of your fellow students also looking for summer work, so it’s best to prep as early as possible.

When you start as early as possible, you can take stock of your available resources, such as your college or university’s career centre. Now’s the best time to set up some appointments with counsellors regarding editing your resume, practicing your interview techniques, and so on. Attend info sessions about specific lines of work and see if there are any networking events as well.

Think of your job search in the same terms as a high-stakes exam or term assignment. The best results require a strong planning and research stage.

2. Harness the Power of Genuine Networking

We mentioned networking events above as part of your prep for your summer job search, but networking in itself is a significant step in your process as well. Reach out to family, friends, and professionals at your college or university to see what opportunities might be readily available. Keep in mind your classmates and former bosses as well.

If you’re looking for summer work that will help you explore a specific industry, consider sending e-mails to land informational interviews at companies you’re interested in. If you’ve done your research and are excited and curious, you never know where informational interviews could take you!

3. Polish Your Application Materials

This tip goes hand in hand with starting early, but we cannot stress how important it is. Give special care to revising your cover letter, your resume, and your LinkedIn profile. Prepping these materials in a rush could lead to grammatical and spelling errors that are best avoided.

4. Expand Your Search to Out of Province

If you want to get more ambitious with your job opportunities, consider looking for seasonal positions outside of your province. Some companies and organizations will offer accommodations while you are working for them, and you could develop a powerful set of professional skills and contacts while you’re working out of province.

5. Apply to a Staffing Firm

This last tip is one that could change your entire job search for the better. Applying to a staffing firm, especially one that offers temporary, temporary-to-permanent, and permanent positions, can help you identify your ideal career.

A staffing firm will evaluate your application for key skills and experience and help match you with a position that best meets your summer work goals. You can land a job that’s flexible, offers you learning opportunities, and may eventually become your career once you graduate.

Apply to an experienced staffing firm like Liberty Staffing to accelerate your summer job search.
