The-Simple-Guide-to-Employing-Temporary-Workers.jpgWhen it comes to employing temporary workers, many companies struggle to find experienced, skilled candidates who are able to start and pick up the role quickly. They go through lengthy recruitment processes for roles that will only be filled for a few weeks or months. Meanwhile, these roles remain unfilled, and work remains unfinished, until the right candidate is found.

If you’re thinking, “There must be an easier, faster, and more cost-effective way,” don’t fear! We’ve put together a simple do’s and don’ts guide for you to keep in mind when employing temporary workers.

DON’T Try to Do It on Your Own

Face it: your HR department has better things to do than go through a grueling recruitment process to hire someone for just a few weeks. This process is lengthy, often complicated, and requires that your hiring manager be intimately familiar with the role so he or she can quickly gauge whether a candidate is qualified or not.

As this individual will only be in the role for a temporary time, you cannot afford to make mistakes in the hiring.

DO Partner with a Temporary Staffing Agency

The benefits of this partnership are endless. Not only are you adding expertise–because the recruiters know all about hiring trends, opportunities, challenges, best practices, and compliance–but you’re also tapping into a bigger pool of better talent than you’d likely find when recruiting on your own.

Furthermore, a temporary staffing agency will assist you in employing temporary workers faster, ultimately saving you time and money. Because agencies know how to attract passive candidates who are highly talented, but perhaps not actively seeking new roles, you can rest assured that the individual you hire from the agency will be skilled and able to pick up the role quickly.

DON’T Ignore Valuable Input from Temporary Workers

When hiring temporary workers, always keep in mind that they have an outsider’s perspective. While this can seem like a bad thing–it may seem like they don’t understand how the company operates–it can actually be a good thing. They can objectively tell you what processes and procedures in your organizations make sense and what simply do not. Mine this information to improve your business and continue to grow and adjust.Don’t simply ignore the input they freely give you.

DO Ask Temporary Workers for Feedback

Proactively ask your temporary staff for feedback on their experience working for you. If your business regularly hires temporary workers (e.g. for seasonal industries), it’s a good idea to find out how to attract the best talent for that short period of time.

When you find out what exactly works (or doesn’t) in your organization, you can leverage this to make your job ads more attractive, your recruiting more manageable, and the onboarding process smoother. You may learn to streamline the information you share with your temporary workers. For example, you might be in the habit of training all new employees on certain software, forgetting that the temporary role in question will never use that particular software. It’s important to continue to re-evaluate what you’re doing and to improve.
