Companies that employ temporary workers in Ontario are still required to follow several aspects of employment law, including mandatory benefits. In addition to official employment benefits, temporary employees often receive many unofficial benefits, too.

Let’s take a look at the benefits for temporary workers from their employers.

Required Benefits for Temporary Workers in Ontario

There are several provincial and federal laws that employers of temporary workers must follow, just like they do for their permanent workers.

The Employment Standards Act determines the legal employment conditions related to the number of hours a person can work and their wages, as well as their vacation time, holiday time, medical leaves, and more. All federally regulated businesses are required to abide by the Employment Standards Act.

The Ontario Human Rights Code has been in place since 1962 and prohibits any actions by an employer that discriminates against employees.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act applies to every party in a Canadian workplace. It addresses any possible workplace hazards and methods for enforcement of worker protections.

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Act was instituted for the promotion of health and safety in all Canadian workplaces. This includes facilitating workers’ ability to recover and return to work after sustaining a personal injury that occurred during employment. It also includes workers who suffer from occupational diseases.

Additional Benefits of Temporary Work

In addition to those legal protections, temporary workers can benefit from many other aspects of this kind of employment.

On-the-Job Training

Temporary positions can usually be performed by the average person, as long as they are physically capable of performing the tasks associated with the job. They don’t require special training or experience, making them a great entry-level position for people who are new to the workforce.

While you are on-site for these temporary positions, you end up getting tons of training! This can be official training from your employer to prepare you for your job tasks. It can also be unofficial training that comes in the form of gaining professional experience in a workplace.

Opportunities to Try New Things

One of the reasons why so many people enjoy temporary work is because it gives them the opportunity to try out different kinds of work before settling on one thing to launch their career.

For example, let’s say that someone starts out by getting a temporary contract in an office. By the end of their contract period, they may have realized that the work was too sedentary for them. They need something more active, so their next job is as a general labourer in an industrial setting. It’s fine, but not something they loved. Then, on their third contract, they end up in a warehouse and love it! It allows them to use their analytical and problem-solving skills in a way that feels exciting and challenging.

At the end of that contract, they apply for (and get!) a permanent position in the warehouse. They have the necessary experience and the confidence to know that it’s a position they are going to enjoy.

Flexibility

Flexibility is one of the best things about temporary positions.

When you are a temporary employee, you have a lot of flexibility regarding when you work, where you work, and how long you work. It’s a great option for people who need to earn a paycheck in between more permanent jobs, students who are home during a break from school, or parents who want to work during the school year but not during their childrens’ school holidays.
