Let’s break down the benefits and drawbacks of temp work.

Benefits of Temporary Employment

Temporary and seasonal work may only account for a small amount of the total number of jobs in Canada, but there are at least two million Canadians who work temporary jobs every year.

Occasionally, a person will choose temporary work because it’s the first readily-available position that they can get when they need to find work quickly. However, there are also plenty of times when people intentionally seek out temporary work because of the many benefits it provides.

Temp Work is Flexible

One of the most important benefits of temporary work is its flexibility. You can make a good salary without over-committing to a position or an employer that you don’t know yet. You can also work for a limited amount of time, based on your needs.

Temporary Work Teaches New Skills

Temporary positions allow you to learn new skills. You can try out a new type of work without a significant time commitment. If you love the work, that’s great! You can seek full time, permanent employment in that area. If it’s not for you, you can move on at the end of your contract.

Getting a temporary job in an office will introduce you to software, job tasks, and the ins-and-outs of running a functional business. Getting a temporary job in a warehouse will teach you about the different positions available in a warehouse. The same goes for industrial positions in a variety of factories and facilities.

Temporary Positions Build Your Resume

If you are in-between permanent positions, a temporary job protects you from long gaps in your employment history. Plus, you get plenty of new experiences to put on your resume.

Temporary work can include a variety of job tasks that look great on a resume, as well as soft skills like communication, leadership, time management, and problem solving.

Staring with a Temp Job is a Great Step Toward Permanent Employment

A lot of companies hire temporary workers as a strategy to “try out” employees before offering them a full time, permanent position. This can work in your favour!

Getting a job with one of these employers can provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your skills, adaptability, and reliability in the workplace.

So many long term employment opportunities come from short term, temporary work. Some temp workers start a permanent position right away, even before their temporary contract ends. Others get experience with a number of employers and apply to the one where they have the strongest connection. Being able to say, “I did great work for you last year!” goes a long way in the application process.

Drawbacks of Temporary Work

There are a handful of drawbacks to working temporary jobs.

For example, they are mostly short term, so they don’t provide much consistency or predictability.

Additionally, it can be difficult to feel part of the team when you’re a temporary worker. It’s kind of like being the new kid. Because you know that your contract is going to end at a certain point, you may not be as motivated to make long term connections.

Last but not least, temporary work isn’t particularly exciting work. It is often entry-level work, with tasks that can be repetitive.
